History

Alappuzha is a landmark between the vast Arabian Sea and a network of rivers that pour into it. In the early twentieth century, Lord Curzon, then Viceroy of the Indian Empire, paid a visit to Alleppey, now Alappuzha. Fascinated by the scenic splendor of the location, he said, "Here nature has spent upon the earth her richest gifts." In his ecstasy, he is supposed to have shouted, "Alleppey, the Venice of the East!"

As a result, the moniker earned a spot on the international tourism map. Alleppey has a fascinating history. Despite the fact that the current town owes its birth to the astute Diwan Rajakesavadas in the second half of the 18th century, the district of Alappuzha is mentioned in classified literature. Alappuzha had commercial ties with ancient Greece and Rome in B.C. and the Middle Ages, according to history.

The Alleppey backwaters attract a huge number of tourists each year. One cannot compare Alleppey to a tranquil town since it comes alive with bustle during the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which is held on Punnamada Lake in August. The event includes a boat race in which enormous snake boats, or Chundans, are rowed by 100 oarsmen in a stunning display of strength, rhythm, and drumbeats. This is a really popular event. Champakulam Moolam Boat Race, Payippad Jalotsavam, and Aranmula Uthrattadi Vallamkali are all renowned boat races.

Along with the big holidays of Onam and Ugadi, another notable festival is the Chittikulangara Bhagavathy Temple Festival, which is held in Mavelikkara in February/March. This event features a parade of elaborately adorned sculptures of bullocks and horses. The Navarathri festival lasts nine days and features colorful processions of elaborately decked-out elephants on the last two days, as well as cultural acts. Around 15 palanquin bearers take part in an impressive parade during the Thaipooyakavadi Festival. The Edathua Feast of St. George is part of the St. George's Church Festival.
