History

Although the city is historically known by different names, Malayalam-speaking communities traditionally refer to it as Kozhikode. Arab merchants called it Qāliqūṭ. The Tamils call it Kallikkottai, while the Chinese call it Kalifo. Although the official name of the city is Kozhikode, it is sometimes known in English by its English version, Calicut. The term calico is an exquisite hand-woven cotton fabric exported from the port of Kozhikode and is believed to be derived from Calicut.

Kozhikode is a small town with a long history. Since ancient times, the city has attracted tourists with its prosperity. For more than 500 years, it has traded black pepper and cardamom to Jews, Arabs, Phoenicians, and Chinese. Because Kozhikode provides complete freedom and security, Arab and Chinese businessmen prefer it to all other ports. In May 1498, Vasco da Gama stopped at Kappad (18 kilometers north) with the leaders of the Portuguese trade delegation. This was the first time that the city had a relationship with Europe. In 2012, Kozhikode was awarded the title of "The City of Sculpture" (Shilpa Nagaram) for various architectural sculptures all over the city.
