History
The name of a group of artificial islands comes from the local gods of the Kumaran region. Under the Vadakkancore rule, which Kumarakom lost to the ruler of Travancore, this fertile land became the plantation project of British farmer Alfred Baker in 1978. During his reign, Kumarakom began growing coconuts and rice in large quantities. The Baker house that he built today is used as the garden of the Taj Mahal Hotel. Over time, Kumarakom began to attract the attention of local people. Since Baker completed the basic work with little time and investment, Kumarakom has grown into the luxury resort it is today.
