History

As a thriving commercial center, Thiruvananthapuram, especially the capital of Travangel, has a long and rich history. It is believed that in the vicinity of Povar is an ancient port called Orphee, which traded with ancient Greece and Rome. In fact, the rulers of Travangel ruled their kingdom on behalf of the chief god of Thiruvananthapuram. One can find many influences of its former Maharajas in the architecture of Travancore, even after its modernization in the early 20th century. After Travancore joined the Federation of India, Thiruvananthapuram became the capital of the Travancore Cochin state. The reorganization of the country in 1956 witnessed the formation of Kerala, uniting the ancient kingdoms of the north and the south. Thiruvananthapuram is the city chosen by the capital of New South Wales. It was not known as Trivandrum until 1991, after which the original name of the city, Thiruvananthapuram, was restored.
