History

The term Pune comes from the word Punya or Saint. Copper dishes dating back to 768 and 758 A.D. They bring the first reference to the city that is now known as Pune. Pune was more famous to be under the rule of Maratha. Shivaji, the founder future of the Maratha Empire, was the grandson of of Maloji Bhosle. Father of him, Shahaji Bhosle, had built the Mahal, where Shivaji and his mother, Jijabai lived for a decade. This is also where Shivaji defeated Aurangzeb`s Shahistekhan. After Shivaji's death at the end of 1600, Aurangzeb returned to power. Later, Peshwa Balaji Vishwanth was appointed, to rule Pune. The region remained under Bajirao II, Balaji Vishwanath's Grandrandson, until he was defeated by the British at the beginning of 1800. Without the British entered power, Pune became an important political center, along with Delhi. In 1851, Pune stepped to become a learning place with the formation of the University of Deccan. Some of the most important universities in the city were founded, such as College Deccan College, Fergusson College, and the University of Engineering. Important historical icons, such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Gopal Krishna Gokhale, were educated at Decan College.
