History
Lansdowne is located in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 1,706 m, surrounded by thick forests of oaks and blue pines. Lansdowne was originally called Kaludanda after the Kalu (blacks) and Danda (hills) of Garhwali. It is named after the Governor of India (1888-1894) and Lord Lansdowne in 1887. Lansdowne was the main place where Gawar's freedom fighters were active during the British era. It is the centre for the training of the new cadets of the Garhwal Rifle Regiment.

Nestled in the lap of Uttarakhand is a charming little town Lansdowne, away from the crowds and the boredom of city life. The War Memorial is located on the Garhwal Rifle Center Parade Ground and is an attraction for tourists. However, permission must be obtained from the military authorities in advance. City attractions include Tip n Top View Point, Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple, Lansdowne's most visited temple, attracting thousands of devotees during the month of Sawan (Indian monsoon), Santoshi Mata Temple, and the Legion Museum. (aka Darwan Singh Sanghralaya),Lover's Lane and St. Mary's Church. For urban excursions, you can go to Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple, Bhairav Garhi Temple, and Bhim Pakora. The annual "Sharadotsava" (Autumn Festival) is also held in this hill station during the fall. The old Kitchner Lines cemetery is one of the most mysterious places dating back to the 1950s. The city is an undiscovered gem, with rustic architecture, fascinating landscapes, old-world charm, and colonial history.
