History

Antiques from the time of Katyuri and Chand rulers are preserved along with traditional Kumaoni-style paintings known as Aipan. Letters sent by Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel to GB Pant and pamphlets protesting the house arrest of great leaders (such as Jawahar Lal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi) remind people of the struggle of independence. The respected Indian scientist and agriculturist, Basiswar Sen (Boshi Sen) set up his laboratory in Almora; his personal collection also finds place in the museum. Apart from these, notable pieces of textiles, miniature paintings, woodworks, terracotta sculptures, musical instruments, coins, manuscripts and other articles of historical, artistic or cultural significance have also been housed in the public museum.
